Star Trek Just Might Come Back To Television

Make It So

Set phasers to squee. Roberto Orci, one of the producers on the Star Trek reboot films, told Sky News that he’d had a meeting with CBS to talk about reviving Trek on TV.

Unfortunately, at this point, we don’t know much beyond that some higher-ups have been throwing the idea around, so it might be a little early to get too excited. There is still a long road ahead before anybody can get the Enterprise back to her original home on the small screen. I’m hoping that, given the commercial success of the reboot, Paramount has some motivation to do more with the franchise in a different format. Fingers majorly crossed.

The best part of a possible Star Trek return to television for me is that J.J. Abrams probably won’t be involved because he’ll still be too busy with Star Wars to do anything more than produce. Remember me cackling gleefully at the prospect of him leaving the movies? Well, I’m doing it again. It’s time to give somebody else a go. Plus, in a long-form format, the writers will be forced to actually give us some original characters and storylines instead of constantly rehashing the original series. Given that the new show would be riding the coattails of the reboot franchise, I’m guessing it would take place in the alternate TOS-era universe, but there’s still a lot of opportunities to tell fresh stories there. We might get a new captain – possibly another lady this time?

The last time new Star Trek appeared on television was when Enterprise ended in 2005. Bush was president, “Hollaback Girl” was on the radio, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hadn’t been released yet. It is time. Make it so, CBS.
